Unlike the standouts from Kendrick Lamar's "Black Panther" soundtrack, without the conjoint viewing experience, "Shallow" looses its poignancy and power.

Last year Jay-Z was nominated for eight awards including Album Of The Year and Song Of The Year, yet did not take home any of the honors. Record of the Year is for the finished product and goes to the artist, producer and engineers; the song also received a nomination for Song of the Year, a songwriters award, but Morris was not among the songwriters.

Noah Shebib, another one of Drake's collaborators, is recognized with three nominations for songs from the "Scorpion" album. He said women need to "step up" if they wanted more nominations in the top categories.

Cardi B, coming off a phenomenal year, Lady Gaga, actor Donald Glover's music moniker Childish Gambino, and country-pop star Maren Morris each had five nominations overall.

Of the eight best new artist nominees, six are women, including Lipa, H.E.R., Chloe x Halle, Margo Price, Bebe Rexha and Jorja Smith. Brandi Carlile, Cardi B, H.E.R., Post Malone, Janelle Monáe and Kacey Musgraves joined the hip-hop stars in the album of the year category.

The recognition for work on his 2018 double-album "Scorpion", as well as contributions to other rappers' tracks, comes after the Toronto-raised performer boycotted last year's Grammys by choosing not to submit anything from his previous release, "More Life". He has been nominated three times but has never won.

At least Kanye West and Taylor Swift won't be dueling at this year's Grammy Awards.

The couple are already decorated Grammy winners.

To be sure, Post Malone has a talent for hit-making.

In the Best Jazz Instrumental Album category, Wayne Shorter received his 21st Grammy nomination, for Emanon.

6lack and J. Cole even got a nod for best rap performance with "Pretty Little Fears". Though seven of his eight nominations come from "Black Panther", he also earned a nod for co-writing Jay Rock's "Win", up for best rap song.

Of course, Beck succeeds here in many respects, but nominating the single "Colours" for "Best Pop Solo Performance" seems like a stretch. The only problem is now that the nominations have been announced, people are coming after Drake saying he doesn't deserve it.

The 2019 Grammys will be awarded at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 10. "All The Stars", his song with SZA, got nods for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year, Best Song Written For Visual Media, and Best Rap/Sung Performance.
