Google Sunsetting Allo & Hangouts To Focus On Just 5 Messaging Apps

Sigh, yes, five: Messages (SMS/RCS/MMS), Duo (Video Chat), Google Voice (US-only for IP calls/messages), Hangouts Chat (Instant messaging) and Hangouts Meet (Video for Enterprise). Furthermore, Google Duo is another high quality messaging app from Google which is one of the highest rated mobile application across iOS and Android as well. Google paused work on Allo earlier this year to focus on Messages, and soon after it brought many of Allo's features to Messages. There had been suggestions that Hangouts could be for the chop, but now Google has spoken out to say that this is not - quite - the case, and in fact it is Allo that will be shuttered.

Google said users have largely switched to Android Messages, its default messaging app which integrates SMS, MMS, and Rich Communications Services (RCS).

According to a report in TechCrunch, the move is not entirely surprising, given further investments in the app was already held back since April. As Google announces in a blog post, Allo will be discontinued in March 2019.

Tech giant Google seems to have failed in launching its own messaging service.

"Given Messages' continued momentum, we've chose to stop supporting Allo to focus on Messages". In this app the creators have implemented the sending of "gitk" and the Smart Reply.

Google confirmed that it is shutting down the Allo app after March 2019.

Google has built many products over the year to improve communication between people as it is on elf the most import part of one's life. But it will continue supporting individuals who use Hangouts until Hangout Chats and Hangout Meet are made available to consumers too. We're fully committed to supporting Hangouts users in the meantime.

Google had originally hoped that the more "kooky" elements of Allo would make it appeal to millenials, leaving Hangouts to take on a more organisational role for communicating between colleagues.

Google has finally called it a day on Allo, its attempt to compete with WhatsApp, to focus on its Messages product.
