Asked about Steele's subsequent contact with Justice Department official Bruce Ohr, Comey said, "I don't know anything about that".

The House Judiciary Committee has released the transcript of former FBI Director James Comey's testimony in a closed session before the committee on Friday.

Even while the questioning was still underway, GOP lawmakers were telling reporters that "they weren't satisfied and might try to bring him back another day", the AP reported.

Comey decided not to recommend the filing of charges against Clinton during the election season of July 2016. Comey was accused in the report of making a serious error in judgment by sending the letter to lawmakers that was he reopening the email investigation.

He also said he had agreed to testify again on December 17. The California Republican said that Comey showed "gleeful acceptance" of his counsel's instructions to remain silent on certain issues. He had argued that Republicans would selectively leak details from the interview.

According to the transcript, Comey did not respond some specific questions related to Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

A Justice Department lawyer largely prevented Comey from answering questions about the investigation into whether Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 presidential election. "The Democrats' political position has always been that the investigation of the investigators is a distraction and something that's being concocted in order to undermine the credibility of Mueller's investigation". He said the department lawyer repeatedly instructed Comey not to answer "a great many questions that are clearly items at the core of our investigation".

Comey had fought the congressional subpoena in court, pushing for a public hearing before settling for some concessions.

Comey said that he will be back for a second round of hearings and "then this will all be over".

Flynn, who was indicted for lying to investigators, has been cooperating with Mueller's probe.

He added that the Justice Department inspector general's investigation into these matters is looming over all of this.

The New York congressman Jerrold Nadler, who is the top Democrat on the judiciary panel, said he would end the investigation in January when Democrats took over the House. "The entire goal of this investigation is to cast aspersions on the real investigation. there is no evidence whatsoever of bias at the FBI or any of this other nonsense".

A transcript will be released "as soon as possible after the interview, in the name of our combined desire for transparency", Goodlatte said.
