A young English tourist who hasn't returned to her Auckland hostel in several days has prompted her family to investigate from across the globe.

A British backpacker who was staying in an Auckland hostel has been missing for five days. "The concern is that the family have not heard from her and when her 22nd birthday was on 2 December, that's when you'd expect to hear or for them to contact her so that's why there's concern".

"She hasn't really replied to any messages between the family and it was her birthday on Sunday and she didn't respond to any messages".

More than 37,000 people have shared a "missing" poster Mr Millane put on Facebook on Tuesday night, and the family has now set up a new page - Help Find Grace.

She was last seen on Saturday about 7.15pm around SkyCity.

Police are asking anyone who may have seen her or who knows where she is to get in touch.

Prior to that she had been part of an organised group heading through South America for six weeks.

Ms Millane is about 5ft 6in tall with brown hair and brown eyes.

The radio silence was "unusual" for Grace, Declan Millane said.

"We are working closely with her family at this time and a number of Police staff are now working on this matter".

Her older brother said it was completely out of character for her not to be in contact with her family.

She was just sight-seeing and travelling around New Zealand.

Her family said she had then meant to go to Australia.

Base Backpackers were approached by Stuffon Wednesday but declined to comment.

British High Commission Wellington consular manager Tony McLeod said the commission was aware of reports of a missing British national.

Beard said police have more than 20 staff working on the case and have been reviewing hours of surveillance camera footage from around the city, which has proved crucial in tracking Millane's movements.

On Wednesday, police received a missing person's report regarding the English national, who is now visiting New Zealand on holiday.
