U.S. mourns ex-president George H.W. Bush's death

He died aged 94 in Houston, Texas.

"We're going to heaven", Baker answered. The former president will lie in state in the US Capitol until Wednesday ahead of a state funeral at the National Cathedral. His casket should arrive at Washington National Cathedral at 11 a.m. when his 90-minute funeral, which will be attended by President Donald Trump, former presidents, and politicians from both sides of the aisle, is slated to begin. He will be honored during several private and public events in Houston and Washington before he is buried in Texas next to his wife, Barbara, and their young daughter Robin, who died in 1953.

cMolina, whose family owns Molina's Cantina, one of Bush's favourite Tex-Mex restaurants in Houston, said he remembers Mr Bush's kindness to his staff whenever he would stop by to eat.

Although the two Republican presidents were in many ways polar opposites - the soft-spoken, patrician Bush reportedly once dismissed the blustering New Yorker as a "blowhard" and even voted for his rival Hillary Clinton - Mr Trump paid the late leader a gracious tribute, saying he had "inspired generations of his fellow Americans to public service".

Bush will be laid to rest at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library located on campus. "He was a down-to-earth person, approachable, and just a good man". A public viewing of Bush's casket will be held at the church from 6:45 p.m. CST on Wednesday until 6 a.m. CST on Thursday.

A detailed schedule for the week's services and commemorations is expected later Saturday.

On Thursday, a private funeral service with about 1,200 invited guests will be held at the church starting at 10 a.m. CST. But each time he was hospitalized, each time loved ones thought that time might be the last, Bush rallied and was released, free to return to his home in Houston or the family compound in Kennebunkport, Maine. His accomplishments were great from beginning to end. Bush loved trains and had a special glassed-in viewing auto designed for this final journey.

The casket will then be flown back to College Station, Texas for Bush's burial. But his final hours weren't really about all of that.

Mayor Turner said that Yolanda Adams, Clay Walker, Larry Gatlin and the Houston Symphony will all perform. The family who weren't able to be present called and spoke with Bush on speaker phone. His death also reduces membership in the exclusive ex-presidents' club to four: Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

Trump, who has not always uttered kind words about the Bush family, offered nothing but praise in the hours after the former president's death was announced. W. told him that he loved him, and that he had been a wonderful father.
