The former president served from 1989 to 1993, and eight years later watched his son George W became the 43rd president - only the second father-and-son chief executives, following John Adams and John Quincy Adams.

Former president George H.W. Bush has died at the age of 94.

He also served as a congressman, Central Intelligence Agency director and Ronald Reagan's vice-president.

The magazine ended up only publishing images of Bush at work, but photographer Leonard McCombe also captured the balance of Bush's life-the home and family that he left behind when he went off to NY to the United Nations. His example lives on, and will continue to stir future Americans to pursue a greater cause.

After retiring from public life, Bush fulfilled a wartime pledge to one day jump out of a plane for fun and famously went skydiving on his 75th, 80th, 85th and 90th birthdays.

Former Soviet premier Mikhail Gorbachev expressed his "deep condolences" to Mr Bush's family. In 1966, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas' 7th district and served two terms. "The two had a very pleasant and private visit at the Bush residence, where they rekindled what was already a very warm friendship", McGrath said.

They were married for 73 years. Prescott Bush Sr., Bush's father, left an estate of $3.5 million, the newspaper reported, adding that Bush wrote in his autobiography that he and Barbara "never considered going to our families for seed money".

By then, Bush's son, George W. Bush, was in his second term in the White House, having taken the United States to war against Iraq for a second time in 2003, and eclipsing his father's record by winning re-election in 2004.

Other family members added their voices.

The Trumps were informed of Bush's death late Friday while in Buenos Aires, Argentina, for the Group of 20 summit of rich and developing nations. The last veteran of World War II to serve as president, he was a consummate public servant and a statesman who helped guide the nation and the world out of a four-decade Cold War that had carried the threat of nuclear annihilation.

George HW Bush's passing comes just months after the death in April of his wife Barbara Bush. At Barbara Bush's funeral, a eulogy was delivered by Jon Meacham, author of a biography of George HW Bush.

Bush died at 10.40pm CT on Friday, his office confirmed in a statement.

Washington's often ugly polarisation does not apply at moments such as this.

Bush presided over economic malaise at home, and infuriated his fellow Republicans during a budget battle with rival Democrats by famously breaking his vow: "Read my Lips: No new taxes".

"I do think he was a transformative president", Meacham, also the author of biographies on Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson, said.
