UEFA launches third European club competition from 2021

The "Europa League II" will not effect the schedule of either the Champions League or the Europa League as games are set to be played on Thursday afternoons.

As well as in the Champions League knock-out phase, the technology will also be used in the 2019 Europa League final.

As part of Uefa's 2021-2024 cycle, the Europa League will be halved in size to 32 teams with an extra play-off round between the group stage and last 16.

UEFA president, Aleksander Ceferin, has always been a champion of the use of technology to assist officials, however he wanted every piece of information on the system before permitting it to be used in the governing body's primary competition.

It also agreed on Monday to roll out the technology in this season's Europa League final and next June's finals of UEFA's new Nations League competition.

That process is repeated in the UEL2 with the eight second-placed teams from the group stage meeting the eight third-placed teams in the Europa League for a place in the last 16.

With the plans briefly outlined by a member of European football's governing body, the new competition is now referred to by the working title "UEL2", abbreviated from Uefa European League 2.

The Europa League group stage, meanwhile, will be reduced from 48 teams to 32. This competition was borne out of ongoing dialogue with clubs through the European Club Association.

The new European competition will offer one Premier League club the chance to participate with various other teams from around the continent.

"No changes will be made to the format and access list of the UEFA Champions League", said UEFA.

UEFA had originally meant to introduce VAR from next season, starting in the the Champions League qualifying playoffs in August.
