Former President Bill Clinton, who defeated Bush in the 1992 election, said, "Hillary and I mourn the passing of President George H.W. Bush, and give thanks for his great long life of service, love and friendship.

Service defined President George H.W. Bush's life, and he taught all of us about leadership, sacrifice and decency".

From 1989 to 1993, President Bush witnessed incredible events - including the end of the Cold War - a period of tension between countries in the West like the United States, and Russian Federation. He died just about seven months after the death of his beloved wife, Barbara Bush.

George H.W. Bush was a moderate Republican known for his diplomacy and ability to compromise with Democrats. Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Bush left behind an "incredible, enduring legacy".

Prior to entering politics, Bush Sr. served in the Navy during World War II.

President Donald Trump, whom Bush pointedly did not support in the bitter 2016 campaign, and First Lady Melania Trump praised the former president in an official White House statement. But George Herbert Walker Bush can rest assured that when the history of the late 20th and early 21st century is written over the decades to come, his name - and that of his family - will figure prominently in its annals.

Former prime minister Bob Hawke also paid tribute, saying "George Bush was a good friend of mine whom I admired as a man of decency and charm, an outstanding president in a hard era". Shot down over the Pacific by Japanese anti-aircraft fire, he parachuted out and was rescued by a submarine after huddling in a life raft for four hours while enemy forces circled.

Within hours of Bush's death Texas A&M University students lay candles in the shape of a T, in front of the former president's statue outside the Bush School building.

Former prime minister David Cameron tweeted: "So sad to hear that George HW Bush has passed away".

During his 1988 presidential campaign, he wrote in his diary that Americans "didn't want same-sex marriage codified".

Bush was a foreign policy pragmatist who led the United States through the turbulent but largely peaceful end of the Cold War and the fall of the Soviet Union, which culminated in 1991 with its break-up.

In 2011, Obama awarded Bush the highest USA civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
