Former Republican U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis was elected Florida governor Tuesday, riding the support of President Donald Trump to narrow victory in the battleground state.

The Tallahassee mayor won his primary on a progressive platform but has drifted toward the center in the runup to the general election, posing with establishment figures like Cory Booker (D-NJ) and former President Barack Obama.

As expected, statewide Democratic candidates fared well in South Florida, where the party dominates voter rolls. It was a crushing blow to Florida Democrats, who hoped a "blue wave" of anti-Trump sentiment would enable them to win a governor's race for the first time since 1994.

The race was the much-anticipated match-up of the ideological wings of each of the major political parties, with DeSantis representing the GOP base that backed Trump, Gillum representing the activist grassroots element of the Democratic Party.

Trump was heavily invested in the race, making two visits to the state in the final week of the campaign. DeSantis also secured the endorsement of the Florida Realtors following the August 28 primary.
