Michigan Proposals 2 and 3 have passed

"Western and northeastern states have led the way on legalizing marijuana, but the victory in MI powerfully demonstrates the national reach of this movement", said Maria McFarland Sánchez-Moreno, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance, in a statement.

People in Colorado voted to remove language in the state constitution allowing slavery and involuntary servitude to be used to punish a crime.

Proposal 1 allows adults aged 21 and older to possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana. A similar measure in North Dakota, however, appears destined for defeat, though Legalize ND campaigners say they won't concede until all votes are counted-and if the measure does fail, they will try again in 2020, the Grand Forks Herald reports. We do know that the proposal's passing doesn't mean you can walk outside and buy weed at this very moment. But the Michigan Legislature still has to write laws that will govern the state's licensing system for marijuana businesses, and then the businesses will have to get proper licensing.

For instance, Colorado voters approved recreational marijuana in November of 2012, but the amendment to change the law didn't go into effect until December 2012.

OH was the most recent state to legalize medical weed through a ballot initiative in October, and Vermont became the first state to bypass the polls entirely by legalizing recreational cannabis through its state legislature in January.

Utah also has a medical marijuana measure on the ballot, which was leading in early returns.

So even though Utah voted yeson Proposition 2 - which would have allowed medical marijuana patients to cultivate cannabis plants, allowed for more dispensaries, and included a more expansive list qualifying conditions for a prescription - the compromise pushed by the Church of the Latter Day Saints cuts back on all of it.

Once considered a taboo product, a growing number of Americans support marijuana legalization.
