Republican candidate Marsha Blackburn shook off Taylor Swift's foray into politics to win election Tuesday night, keeping a Senate seat President Donald Trump campaigned for safely in GOP hands. She'll leave the House and become a senator on January 3, 2019, taking over the seat vacated by Republican Bob Corker, who is retiring. Nonpartisan political analysis site Larry Sabato's Crystal Ball had labeled the state as lean Republican and a recent NBC News/Marist poll showed Blackburn with a 4 point lead. Trump visited the state three times.

Blackburn, however, looked to highlight Bredesen's party affiliation at every turn, regularly tying him to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and some of the more high-profile liberal members of the legislative body. She rarely diverged from Trump, and touted his proposed U.S. -Mexico border wall and tax cuts while blasting Bredesen's opposition to both. "People want to have a U.S. Senate that's going to support the president", Blackburn told voters. Marco Rubio of Florida, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Joni Ernst of Iowa, Tom Cotton of Arkansas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina also came along for separate campaign events. "And you know what?"

With 45 percent of precincts reporting, Blackburn had garnered a whopping 62 percent of the vote, compared to just 37 percent for Bredesen.

In a lengthy post on Instagram about a month before the election, Swift said she could not support Blackburn because of her record of voting against women and the LGBT community. Bredesen's moderate stances, he predicted, would give these voters an easy excuse not to vote for her. She fought for Tennessee values in the legislature and in Congress. "Having served at the state level as well as the federal level, Marsha will help bring power back to the states and truly make America great again".
