Amazon to Offer Free Shipping on Holiday Orders

Amazon's offer, which started Monday, applies to hundreds of millions of items and on orders that arrive in time for Christmas.

FBN's Cheryl Casone on Amazon reportedly nearing a decision on the location of its second headquarters and the company waiving its purchase minimum for free shipping on holiday orders.

There is no minimum purchase price.

Amazon has something special for Prime users as well, as it says that same-day delivery is now available to "tens of millions" of subscribers on more than three million items. Amazon responded on Monday by dropping the $25 minimum order size to qualify for the retailer's free shipping perk. The offer covers every product category, and although no end date is listed in the Amazon press release, orders arriving in time for Christmas suggests it will end around December 22 just like Target's offer does.

The move makes hundreds of millions of items eligible for free shipping.

"Thanks to a healthy economy and strong consumer confidence, we believe that this holiday season will continue to reflect the growth we've seen over the past year", the group said in a statement.

"Free shipping is one of the easiest promotions to execute for a retailer, and is certainly popular among consumers, however it is a very costly initiative to undertake", he said, noting that Amazon's shipping costs for its 2017 fiscal year totaled nearly $22 billion, and its shipping costs over the last 12 months were about $26 billion. A spokeswoman said it is the first time Amazon has dropped its minimum order size to qualify for free standard shipping - which generally takes between five and eight days - to zero. Moreover, Prime members in more than 60 cities can receive deliveries in under one hour from Whole Foods Market.
