White House presses forward with Trump's Space Command

"Our nation's Armed Forces have always been at the vanguard of advancing American leadership beyond the bounds of Earth, and the Space Force will ensure a new era of American supremacy in space".

He also said the Trump administration hopes to establish Space Force, a sixth branch of the US military focused on outer space, as soon as 2020.

The White House does not foresee the creation of an independent space force before 2020, Vice President Mike Pence told a space conference in Washington on October 23.

Secondly, the secretary of defense will create a new joint organisation, the Space Development Agency, that will break free from ineffective bureaucratic structures and provide the men and women of the space force, the cutting-edge warfighting capabilities that they need, faster and more effectively, he said.

Weapons of mass destruction, like nuclear weapons, are now banned from orbit through the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, signed by both Russian Federation and the United States during the Cold War.

The proposed bill would also create the Bureau of Space Commerce under the U.S. Department of Commerce to liaise with industry representatives and organizations, according to a copy provided to Reuters. It also calls for $10 million a year for five years starting in 2020 to fund the commerce arm.

The space force proposal has been criticized for stepping up the militarization of space, despite worldwide treaties supposedly designating space as a peaceful domain.

On Tuesday, Pence described the proposed Space Force as the "next and natural evolution of our armed forces", arguing that US adversaries such as China and Russian Federation are developing new technologies, such as hypersonic missiles, that make space a place where wars can be fought.

The new force would be created to 'ensure that our warfighters have the freedom and flexibility they need to deter and defeat any threat to our security in the rapidly evolving battlefield of space, ' he said.

"This is what our competitors are already doing", Pence said.
