India beat West Indies by a comfortable 8-wicket margin in the first ODI in Guwahati - all while chasing a mammoth 323 runs to win. The comprehensive victory in Guwahati gave India a 1-0 lead in the five-match one day global series.

Hetmyer eventually fell in the 39th over, caught on the ropes at long on off left-arm spinner Ravi Jadeja but India - after snaring three wickets for 30 runs - were frustrated by tail-enders Roach (26 not out) and Devendra Bishoo (22 not out) who put on 44 in an unbroken ninth wicket stand at the end. "They did not take any chances, they were just playing according the situation", said the left-arm spinner of Kohli and Rohit's 246-run partnership, the first-ever 200-plus run stand against the West Indies.

The century was the 29-year-old's 20th in successful chases, moving him further away from fellow Indian great Sachin Tendulkar's 14, and it was his eighth while chasing at least 300 runs.

During the knock, Kohli also breached the 2,000-run mark in global cricket this year.

Rohit, who boasts three double hundreds in ODIs, grew in confidence as he spent time at the crease and cleared the boundary rope easily when he looked to attack, hitting 15 boundaries and eight sixes, the last of which brought up India's victory. "It's never too hard when you have Rohit at the other end", Kohli said. Among the top three, I've preferred the anchor role, but today I felt good and I communicated with Rohit that he should play the anchor role. I thought West Indies were really good with the bat. And when I got out, he took over and [Ambati] Rayudu played the anchor.

What do you think can Rishabh Pant become the finisher in ODI cricket? And I've always enjoyed batting with him. "When we are batting like that, it's good fun out there and we know the team will benefit from it as well", Kohli said at the post match presentation ceremony.

Holder said it was crucial that the Windies take a new look at their bowling plans before the next ODI in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.
