Approximately 20 soccer fans in Rome have reportedly been injured in terrifying escalator malfunction caught on film.

The Guardian reported that one fan of the Russian team had his foot severed during the incident, with a witness telling the paper it was like "a scene from apocalypse".

Video footage posted on twitter shows the escalator picking up speed, forcing a pile up at the bottom of the stairway.

An escalator collapse in Rome's La Repubblica metro station on Tuesday night, has left 24 CSKA Moscow fans injured, with one person in a serious condition, city administrators have confirmed. (AP) More than 20 people were injured in the accident in central Rome.

Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi visited the metro station and said the local transport authority had opened an investigation.

People on the parallel escalator can be seen trying to grab those on the broken machine and pull them to safety.

Roma and CSKA fans also clashed outside the Stadio Olimpico arena before the game. "They had various injuries caused by the escalator that was twisted, therefore serious injuries". One of the injured had his leg amputated.

La Repubblica website said the accident may have been caused by singing and chanting fans jumping up and down on it.
