North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un has invited Pope Francis to meet in Pyongyang, a South Korean spokesman said Tuesday.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday deepened a rift in the alliance with South Korea after hints that South Korea could lift some sanctions against North Korea.

It is yet to be confirmed whether the Pope will accept Kim's invitation.

North Korea's sports minister Kim Il-suk said that the Chinese delegation's visit marks a new chapter in North Korea-China friendship, and will deepen the unity and friendship (really trying to drive those concepts home, here) between the two countries' people. I look forward to seeing Chairman Kim again, in the near future, ' he tweeted Sunday morning.

Regardless, citizens are still hopeful that the country can "maintain a peaceful atmosphere while strengthening the economy, and that everything will proceed smoothly as the country looks to build relationships with South Korea and the United States", the source said.

Trump talked of "incredible progress", hailing the absence of missile or nuclear tests this year and the recent return of remains of United States service members killed during the Korean War.

"North Korea promised complete denuclearization".

"On their soil also", Trump added. Trump canceled Pompeo's planned trip to Pyongyang in August, citing little evidence that North Korea had followed through on any of its commitment to denuclearize.

Moon has held three bilateral meetings with the reclusive North Korean leader, the most recent of which was their summit held in Pyongyang last month.

"You got no rockets flying, you have no missiles flying, you have no nuclear testing", Trump said at the White House.

South Korea's Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha said on Wednesday that the sanctions, imposed against Pyongyang following a torpedo attack on a corvette that killed 46 South Korean sailors in 2010, were under review.

Pompeo was reportedly promised a meeting with Kim in July, but no such meeting took place.

"We are starting to see a first wave of actions we can take on all four pillars of the Singapore communique", said Biegun.

According to a joint statement signed by Trump and Kim, the U.S. would provide a security guarantee to North Korea in return for Pyongyang's commitment to denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

Kim has presented himself as an global statesman, sharing food, wine and laughs with South Korean officials and appearing thoroughly at ease during his meeting with Trump in Singapore.

The real estate mogul turned president has declared himself "in love" with Mr Kim, and cast his sudden, rapid diplomatic push as a signature foreign policy achievement, saying he has kept Americans safe, as Pyongyang has held off on further nuclear and missile tests.
