PSN name change is now possible after Sony announces beta feature

Sony is rolling out name change functionality first as a beta that will only be available through the PlayStation Preview Program. The testing phase is slated to wrap up in November. So I'm anxious that, in a few months, we'll start seeing a flood of posts on the PlayStation forums or subreddit in which users are upset about losing game progress, saves, or trophies because they changed their names.

Sony has confirmed that players might encounter errors with some applications and games not supported, but that players will be able to revert back to an old ID for free, which should resolve the issue. You then have the option to also display your old ID or hide it away in shame. However, unlike the previous setting, this option is only available while applying the change and not after.

You will be able to change your PSN ID as many times as you want.

The first change will be free but all future ID changes after that will cost £7.99, while PS Plus members will pay £3.99. Do you have plans to change your PSN name? So 24 year-old TW33NY_BOppErZ can now rest easy that they can change their handle to something more palatable in the new year. There'll be a short wait after that, with the feature set to officially roll out for all users sometime in early 2019. Some games released before 1st April 2018 may not play nicely with new names, and in particular this might affect PS3 and PS Vita titles.

If you ever wanted to change your PSN Online ID on your PS4 but were frustrated at the lack of ability to do so, there is some good news on the horizon. Sony has since made the news official, explaining that PSN users can change their name as soon as 2019, however there will be drawbacks. This feature has been requested endlessly since the PlayStation Network was launched back in 2006, and now, almost 12 years later, Sony is finally ready to flip the switch on this functionality.
