Promising youngsters Mason Mount and Jadon Sancho have earned their first England call-ups to Gareth Southgate's squad for the upcoming clashes with Spain and Croatia.

There is also a nod for ex-Man City prodigy Jadon Sancho, 18, who is going great guns with Borussia Dortmund this season - thus potentially making him the first player born post-Millennium to play for England.

Sancho has netted once in the Bundesliga this season, while Chelsea-owned Mount has struck three times for Derby County in the Championship and Leicester City's Maddison's 15 chances created are the most among Englishmen in the Premier League.

Reports suggested he would be handed his first U21 call but an impressive performance and an assist against Monaco on Wednesday changed Southgate's mind.

The 21-year-old has scored three goals and picked up two assists in only seven appearances for Claude Puel's side, impressive form that has caught the eye of the England boss.

Mount, now on loan from Chelsea at Derby, is another to have experienced football overseas, with the 19-year-old having spent last season at Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem.

Harry Winks, capped once, has returned to the senior team the day after starting for Tottenham against Barcelona in the Champions League, while uncapped Watford midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah is back in the squad after recovering from a long-term knee injury.

Gareth Southgate announced a youthful 25-man squad on Thursday shortly after confirming the extension of his contract through to the 2022 World Cup. We think there are some exciting young players that we've been tracking, either through their clubs or our junior teams ...

Jadon's is an unusual story.

Southgate joked that assistant Steve Holland, who has also signed on until 2022, had been watching Sancho disguised in "a flat cap and glasses" in Germany, where the teenager's displays were enough for a call-up regardless of the current injury issues. He has been fearless enough to go and play overseas and has started two Champions League games for Dortmund and has also had a big impact from the bench in their league games.

"Mason's is a slightly different situation".

It's a big call, but it aligns to what we've done in the last 18 months. Alex McCarthy (3 December 1989) is the oldest player at 28.
