The iPhone Xs is at last official - alongside the iPhone Xs Max and iPhone XR, and despite all the secrecy and speculation, it's much as everyone expected it to be. With the introduction of iPhones ditching the Apple-made feature of 3D Touch, it could spell the death of one of Apple's most promising features, even if no one really uses it. All three have Apple's new A12 chip and Face ID, but the XS models feature more vivid OLED displays.

Bar the camera and screen, the rest of the specifications are largely the same as the XS and XS Max. Overall users get a viewing and interactive area that is up to 30 per cent larger thanks to the bigger screens and narrower device borders.

The iPhone XS comes with a 5.8-inch screen, as the iPhone X did.

At the launch, Tim Cook confirmed the names of the new models - which had been leaked earlier in the day - as iPhone XS, XS Max and XR, as well as revealing release dates for global regions. However there are new Android phones with similar or better specifications that sell for considerably less than the 2017 iPhone 8, and Android has a higher market share in Australia than iPhone.

If you're interested in the iPhone Xr, the new entry-level device in the X family that comes in six colors, you'll have to wait a little longer though.

Moving to the camera, both the iPhones will have two 12-MP cameras one of which will be a telephoto lens and the other will be a wide-angle lens.

"This feature also provides an incentive to upgrade to the new devices, for users who might have just upgraded previous year, but have been waiting for Dual-SIM support for their personal and business lines for some time".

This gives the phone up to 15% faster performance cores and up to 50% faster graphics performance.

How about a new operating system instead?

Not only is the iPhone XS Max the biggest iPhone ever, it's also the most expensive.

Other camera features include Portrait Lighting, Animoji, and Memoji.

The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max would be available in 64GB, 256GB and 512GB storage variants in space grey, silver and a new gold colour starting at Rs 99,900 and Rs 1,09,900, respectively through Apple authorised resellers in India.

Customers will be able to pre-order the new iPhone series from Friday, 14 September, and purchase in stores from 21 September. Apple explained that it wanted to differentiate its Plus models from the Max as although the new 6.5in device is the same size as the iPhone 8 Plus, you get a much larger screen with the edge-to-edge display. It comes with a huge 6.5-inch screen, which really should qualify it as a small iPad.

Apple also unveiled the new Series 4 Watch with prices ranging from £399 to £799. Also inside the new model are improved accelerometer and gyroscope sensors, which can now detect when the user falls.

Apple on Wednesday unveiled updated versions of its priciest iPhones along with a new smartwatch that allows users to take their own electrocardiograms, as the USA tech giant looks to boost its momentum in a sputtering market.
