Watford 2-1 Tottenham: Five Things We Learned

MAURICIO POCHETTINO was clearly unhappy with his Tottenham Hotspur side after witnessing Watford end their flawless start to the season with a 2-1 Premier League success at Vicarage Road.

Pochettino was critical of his players' failure to hold on to the lead given to them by Abdoulaye Doucoure's 53rd-minute own goal.

Spurs were flying high after thrashing Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford in the previous game, but Pochettino believes his players failed to come back down to earth to put in the hard work needed to beat the Hornets.

'After four years in charge of Tottenham it can happen, ' he said, after Watford continued their own flawless start to the new campaign.

Watford host Manchester United in the league on September 15 after the global break. "It is so painful because the first half looked like a friendly game".

"I think we have played better in other games but against Tottenham you have do things differently", Watford manager Javi Gracia said.

So, how did Tottenham and all the Spur's supporters go from top of the world, thinking we want Barcelona, to going into the break like Deadpool on top of 1200 gallons of fuel.

"We conceded two goals that if you want to be a contender you can not concede". This is good to compare.

"The reality is if you want to be a contender today we should win and win easy because everything was ready to win the game".

That is very painful but I am not upset.

Cascarino was more scathing, writing in his column for The Times newspaper: "I wonder what Troy Deeney would say about Tottenham".

Fellow former Spurs player Jermain Defoe, however, blamed Tottenham's set-piece deficiencies on their positioning instead.

"I was very, very disappointed and my message is you need to go there like a lion and try to score in every single action". "Manchester City last season, Chelsea the season before - they all concede chances like this, but if you are going to win, you need to defend well". Instead, after four games, they occupy a position in the top three and are yet to drop a point. We need to talk about how to improve. "It's a time now when it's coming that we create a team and I think that's what the club is doing here - trying to create a team - and, step by step, it's coming".
