England's lack of quality in the middle of the park was highlighted on Saturday night when former World Champions Spain brought their riches of midfield talent to Wembley to dominate England in their UEFA Nations League opener.

England's first-half performance in the friendly win over Switzerland was "embarrassing" and the players "weren't happy with how we were playing", says full-back Danny Rose. It's great we can all shout at each other and tell each other it's not good enough.

A lacklustre opening 45 from England saw the first half come to a close goalless, with the visitors probably feeling like they should have been in the lead. With their rendition of Atomic Kitten's "Whole Again" in tribute to Gareth Southgate on loop for nearly the entire game, Rashford's goal was a rare moment of respite.

He played for 573 minutes at the World Cup this summer, picking up six goals and the Golden Boot along the way, and has started 61 matches in all competitions since the start of last season.

"It was quite calm by the time I got in there".

"It was a tall order to ask them to play against an excellent Switzerland side, they kept the ball well and we had to chase too much". We always encourage them to have a voice.

"The first half was quite predictable really, but the players needed the game". We also know that, on Saturday against Spain, we could have feasibly ended with a draw which would have looked different as well.

The importance of holding on for a morale-boosting win for Southgate was shown as he introduced a host of regular starters, including captain Harry Kane off the bench for the final quarter. The slickness of their passing did not translate into goal chances, but after their rout of Iceland, the spring in their step augurs well for next month's testing trip to Belgium in the Nations League.

Speaking more to talkSPORT, he said: "We were outplayed". "I think for the teams that went towards the end of the World Cup it's a really hard period because so many players have missed pre-season and you're not really sure what physical condition they're in".
