Of all the plays that Jets fans will play and replay from this stunning 48-17 opening-night victory over the Lions, this is the one that would've worn the tape out in the old days of VHS machines. It'll mark the regular season debut of highly touted rookie quarterback Sam Darnold, who'll start under-center for NY.

Darnold was drafted with the third overall pick this year, and he earned the start in the season opener for the Jets. "And then he took one to the house".

"The story of the game is turnovers". I've been saying all summer that the depth at wide receiver is one of the more overlooked areas of this team and they aren't getting the recognition they deserve. "Can't do that to our team", he said. "JETS! JETS!" A crew clad in green and white filed into seats in four sections along the NY sideline and appeared to outnumber Detroit fans who stuck around for the bitter end.

For starters, the Jets' passing offense scored four points more than expected based on the down, distance and field position of each play, indicating Darnold did nothing more than an average quarterback would be expected to do. In free agency, they signed Trumaine Johnson, Spencer Long, Avery Williamson, and Isaiah Crowell to lucrative multi-year deals.

The most ghastly of Stafford's interceptions was his third.

Following the game, the Jets players said that the formations, as well as hand signals from Matthew Stafford, tipped the plays to the NY defenders. The 20-yard pass he made on that drive, rolling to his right and whipping a throw to Terrelle Pryor while on the run, again represented his unusual skill set. It never had a chance.

"We knew that they had been hitting a couple spots behind me and we got that covered too, so we just played with great odds and sat on it". No happy feet in the pocket, and no further forced throws. He said the Lions knew generally what the Jets were going to do as well, but that they were "obviously outexecuted".

Context is also key when comparing Darnold's debut to other quarterbacks in previous years.

On top of his four interceptions, Stafford overthrew both Marvin Jones and T.J. Jones in the end zone for what would have been easy touchdowns. "It seemed like we were in his head as a defense". He was very good when given a clean pocket to throw from - 78 percent completion rate and a 123.4 passer rating - yet was 2-for-3 for 13 yards when pressured.

Matt Patricia's debut as an National Football League head coach went about as bad as it possibly could have Monday night in Detroit. Monday night's action between the Lions and Jets and the late night game between the Oakland Raiders and Los Angeles Rams left much to be desired. It doesn't change my demeanor or the way I approach the game.

The Lions ended up with 39 yards on 15 carries. I mean, do I really need to have a reason? Darnold converted a third down with his legs to take the Jets into field goal range.

"He's a leader, he's going to want to do that".

"We've got to coach this a lot better than what we did", he said. "They obviously are the ones that played well tonight", Patricia said.

Stafford and the Lions will try to turn the page quickly. He has no choice but put Monday nightmare behind him and move on to San Francisco. There's a lot of harsh criticism from what I am told.

"We knew his signals", Lee said.
