West Nile fever outbreak claims three lives in northeast Italy

Connecticut Department of Public Health (CTDPH) has confirmed that Fairfield has one of the first two positive human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) for the 2018 mosquito season.

Most human West Nile virus cases are reported in August and September.

The warmer weather has contributed to a sharp increase in the number of West Nile virus infected mosquitoes in Saskatchewan, the health authority indicated in a media release Friday. The patients did not travel out of the state before becoming ill.

Gabrielle Sakolsky, assistant superintendent with the Cape Cod Mosquito Control Project, says they had nine samples test positive for the virus for the whole season previous year.

West Nile virus is a relatively common disease; Cabell County also confirmed cases in 2017 and 2015.

The SHA is reminding residents to take precautions including wearing insect repellants that contain DEET; ones containing Icaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus are also recommended.

The City of Troy takes preventative measures to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes, but it said these efforts do not extend to private property. Drain such areas around your home (gutters, pools, tires, buckets, water bowls, etc.).

Change water in birdbaths frequently, at least once a week. Report swimming pools that are not being properly maintained by contacting the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control District at 1-800-429-1022 or www.fightthebite.net/pool-program.

DRESS APPROPRIATELY-Wear long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, and socks.

Schedule outdoor events to avoid the hours between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. Permethrin products are intended for use on items such as clothing, shoes, bed nets and camping gear and should not be applied to skin.

"Make sure to fix or install window and door screens to keep mosquitoes from entering your home".
