Bilateral ties between Malaysia and Indonesia are close with Mahathir visiting Jakarta in June, making it his first official tour of the region after a stunning election victory in May over Najib.

On Saturday, the Indonesian government agreed to hand over the yacht to Malaysia.

The $250 million Equanimity, seized by Indonesia off Bali in February in cooperation with the U.S. FBI, was handed over to Malaysian authorities on Monday at the Indonesian island of Batam near Singapore.

Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad thanked Indonesian President Joko Widodo, in a video posted on his Facebook page, for facilitating the yacht's handover.

Malaysia opposition leading lawmaker Hishammuddin Hussein, who was formerly defense minister, condemned Tuesday, a decision taken by its country's new government to shut down a Saudi-backed anti-terrorism center.

Last month, Najib was arrested and charged with abuse of power and criminal breach of trust related to an alleged transfer of 42 million ringgit (£7.9 million) into his personal bank account from SRC International, a former unit of state fund 1MDB.

Najib set up 1MDB when he took power in 2009 but the fund amassed billions in debts and is being investigated in the USA and several other countries.

The $250m boat was allegedly bought with money stolen from 1MDB. If there is anyone who claims the yacht is theirs, they can show proof that they own it.

Malaysian authorities have issued an arrest warrant for Low, whose whereabouts are unknown.

Thomas said that as a result of the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaties (MLAs) between Indonesia, the United States and Malaysia, which were activated recently, sensitive and delicate negotiations were conducted at the highest levels of different agencies in the three countries to accomplish the feat.
