[H]ardOCP: Humans Compete Against OpenAI FIVE Bots in Dota 2 Showdown

The bot has around 10,000 hours of Dota 2 playtime, which it uses to formulate advanced strategies that pro teams employ, according to the OpenAI organization. Despite the wealth of experience on the team, the humans could do little against the never-ending onslaught and precision of OpenAI, and they quickly lost in humiliating fashion. Something interesting to note is that after the humans paused the first game, and the bots paused game two.

After demonstrating its prowess in Dota 2 1v1 games, the newly enhanced "OpenAI Five" has shown that it can thrash even the best human teams. The bots then learned to play Dota at the rate of 180 years per day and now they have evolved to a level where they have beaten human professional players easily.

A year ago a single OpenAI Dota 2 bot made a surprise appearance at Valve's International Dota 2 tournament held in Seattle and had a decisive victory playing against Danylo "Dendi" Ishutin, who having been beaten in the first two rounds declined to play the third. The opening to the tournament saw members of the audience facing off against OpenAI as a sort of benchmark of their prowess. There, OpenAI bots will face the winning team, for its biggest challenge yet. "You have imperfect information, you have team work, you have these exponential combinations of different heroes and items, and you have to be able to deal with all of that".

Team Human did squeeze out a win in the third match, but not without some strings attached. It still pummeled the human team in just 25 minutes.

The only possible bright point was that OpenAI let the final match composition be chosen by the audience, meaning the audience stepped in to vote for which heroes OpenAI would control.

The tournament was a best of three but clearly designed for fun more than objective.

While OpenAI's defeat of some of Dota 2's cream of the crop players is decidedly impressive, what's definitely more noteworthy is the unprecedented advancement of artificial intelligence itself. The best gamers in the world are machines.
