Critics accused him of mismanagement and blamed him for the country's recent economic problems, which have been exacerbated by the restoration of US sanctions lifted under the 2015 nuclear agreement.

Within hours of the sanctions taking effect, German carmaker Daimler said it had "suspended our already limited activities in Iran in accordance with the applicable sanctions".

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, speaking in a meeting with North Korea's foreign minister, said that America could not be trusted, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency.

The nuclear deal was important "not only to the region's security but the world's security", he told the BBC.

"China's lawful rights should be protected".

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said his country will not oppose third-country mediation between the US and Iran.

The withdrawal of the United States from a landmark 2015 nuclear deal led to the first tranche of related sanctions being reimposed on Tuesday. Companies doing business with Iran will be barred from the United States, President Donald Trump said on Tuesday.

Earlier this year, USA military commanders in the Middle East were puzzled to note that a unsafe trend of Iranian small boats harassing Navy vessels in the Persian Gulf had suddenly and unexpectedly come to a halt. "Our crews that are on board our ships are well rehearsed, well prepared by the U.S. Navy when they come into our area", Votel said.

USA officials have said in recent weeks that they aim to reduce Iran's oil exports to zero as a means of pressuring Tehran to halt its nuclear and missile programmes and involvement in regional conflicts in Syria and Iraq.

In a commentary published by the Guardian on Wednesday, Khoshroo stressed that by ditching the nuclear deal with Iran and sanctioning countries engaged in business transactions with the country, the U.S. is violating UNSC Resolution 2231.

Already facing broad economic fallout as their currency implodes, Iranians are wondering how the next phase of the crisis in United States relations will play out - and what, exactly, America's long-term strategy is toward their country.

Trump said Monday that he was open to new talks to reach a "more comprehensive deal" with Iran.

On Monday, Rouhani said Iran was ready to enter talks with the USA if Washington compensated the country for past damages.

He is seeking to compel Iran to agree to a new nuclear accord, but the UK, France, Germany, Russia and China have pledged to abide by the deal they negotiated along with the USA in 2015, and continue trading with Iran.
