"I like Mike!" -the 45 president garnered over 39 thousand re-tweets as well as a response from his preferred player Michael Jordan; who told NBC News, "I support L.J., he's doing an awesome job for his community".

NBA great Michael Jordan - whom Trump said he preferred in signing off his tweet aimed at James - issued a statement through AP in which he praised the four-time NBA MVP. "He's doing an incredible job for his community", the Chicago Bulls legend said.

U.S. President Donald Trump took to Twitter just before midnight on Friday night to question the intelligence of CNN Presenter Don Lemon and guest LeBron James.

"Her platform centers around visiting organizations, hospitals and schools", Grisham added, "and she would be open to visiting the I Promise School in Akron", a school that James himself founded and opened just last week for "at-risk" youth.

James also talked about social issues and Trump's comments about sports in the past.

Trump tweeted, "I like Mike!" in an attempt to insert his thoughts on the ongoing conversations about Jordan and James' athletic legacies.

National Basketball Association legend Michael Jordan and U.S. athletes rallied to LeBron James' defense on Saturday after U.S. President Donald Trump questioned the star player's intelligence in a tweet.

As backlash built on Saturday, Lemon shot back in a tweet.

James had said in an interview that Mr Trump was divisive and had emboldened racists.

"Sports has never been something that divides people", James said.

Trump took to Twitter to vent on Friday night, presumably after he watched a rebroadcast of the interview.

James, meanwhile, did not weigh in on the debate and instead on Saturday morning shared photos from the school he just opened.

The first lady's spokeswoman released a statement praising James for starting a school for at-risk children in OH following her husband's attack on his intelligence. The president reportedly was incensed recently when he got on Air Force One and the first lady's TV set was tuned to the news network, and not Fox News.

Trump's insults came after James criticized the president in the interview.
