Chelsea in talks to sign Mateo Kovacic from Real Madrid

Inter have been chasing the playmaker all summer, but Real Madrid, who have already lost star man Cristiano Ronaldo, insist that they will not allow the Croatia worldwide to leave unless his £668 million release clause is met.

Spanish newspaper, Marca reports that Real Madrid have now given up with their efforts to keep Kovacic and the Croatia worldwide is now on the verge of joining Chelsea.

Chelsea are close to completing a loan deal for Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic, according to The Mirror.

Kovacic has also been linked with Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham.

The player will be hoping to rediscover the form he showed in Italy whilst on loan at the London club.

Chelsea may well be set to offer him an escape route.

The likelihood of the Belgian No1 arriving at the Bernabeu is heavily weighted on the Blues' success in finding a suitable successor for him. The Italian wants someone with a different profile to what he now has in his ranks, and Kovacic seemingly fit the bill.

Corriere dello Sport have been largely reporting Inter's interest as they look to bounce back and match Juventus' move for Cristiano Ronaldo by bringing the Croatian global to the club.

Kovacic would return to Madrid next summer in what will be a good deal for Los Blancos given that they retain full control of the player's future. Kovacic wants to play more regular football, with interest from the Premier League. Goal claim that we're in talks to sign Kovacic on a season-long loan.

Amid speculation linking him with an exit this summer, Real Madrid ace Luka Modric has appeared on promotional work for the club's new third kit.
