Authorities say the body of a baby was found floating in the water near the Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan.

"She just called me over and said there was a baby in the water".

Tourists from Oklahoma made the disturbing discovery and waved police down around 4 p.m. Sunday.

"I thought it was a doll", Monte Campbell said.

Monte Campbell, 46, of Stillwater, Oklahoma, said he retrieved the infant from the edge of the water after his wife, Diana, spotted the baby floating faceup near a pile of debris, wearing only a diaper.

Austin Campbell, who was visiting the area with his family, said his father jumped into the river with hopes of saving the young child. There was no respiration nor pulse.

The baby, reportedly 8 months old, was brought from the embankment to a pedestrian walkway and officers also performed CPR while waiting for EMS.

No parent or guardian was present at the scene, police said.

The location near the South Street Seaport on the heavily-trafficked East River, a tidal estuary subject to strong currents, divides Manhattan from Brooklyn.

The cause of death is unclear, and his body showed no signs of trauma. Both park-lined shorelines are usually teaming with tourists this time of year.

Unsure if someone else had gone in with the baby, rescue crews continued to search the water Sunday night.
