The world's biggest maker of memory chips and the flagship subsidiary of South Korea's Samsung group, the company has weathered a series of setbacks, including an embarrassing global recall of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone due to exploding batteries in 2016.

Net income attributable to the shareholders of the parent company for the second quarter of 2018 rose 1.68 percent to 10.98 trillion Korean won from 10.80 trillion won a year ago.

Semiconductors generated 11.61 trillion won in operating profit between April and June, posting a 44.6 percent year-on-year growth. During the second quarter, its semiconductor business generated 11.61 trillion won ($10.39 billion) in operating profit, almost 80 percent of the entire operating income.

The earnings results reflect Samsung's troubles in shoring up its mobile business even as the company enjoys resilient sales of memory chips.

The chip unit posted a record 11.6 trillion won operating profit in the second quarter, up 45 percent from a year ago and in line with market expectations.

But Samsung said it "expects sustained strength in the memory market and growing demand for flexible OLED panels to drive earnings higher in the second half".

It was down 4.9 percent from the previous quarter, which logged the record quarterly profit, but it kept a year-over-year growth trend owing to robust semiconductor sales.

"It is not an easy game for Samsung unless it really meets consumer's needs for new smartphones".

Outlook for the memory chip market remained rosy on demand for server and PC memories as well as new mobile phone launches.

Describing the Tab S4, Samsung said: "Samsung Electronics today announced the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4, a new 2-in-1 Android tablet designed for people who want to do more on the go-from home to the office and everywhere in between".

Samsung will soon unveil its second new flagship smartphone of the year, the Galaxy Note 9.

A recent photo has leaked on Twitter showing the price range of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9.

The company said it also plans to expand the scope of services powered by artificial-intelligence technology, and seek to improve connectivity with voice-recognition system Bixby and mobile payment tool Samsung Pay. "Its third-quarter operating profit is expected to hit 16.8 trillion won", said Lee Seung-woo at Eugene Investment & Securities.

Samsung said it also made a decision to hand out dividends of 354 won per shares, with the combined amount of 2.4 trillion won.

Samsung shares slid 0.3 percent by 0620 GMT, compared with the flat broader market.
