Croatia progressing to the World Cup final betters their best ever performance at the tournament by one step.

Lovren, 29, had been irked before the clash against England by questions of how he would deal with Harry Kane after the Tottenham Hotspur forward gave him the runaround in a 4-1 win for the north London side against Liverpool last October.

"It's something special for me", Lovren told beIN Sports."From my point of view, people were saying I had a hard season but I don't agree with that". Like with my case, I think people should respect me also.

Dejan Lovren believes that he has established himself as one of the world's best defenders and deserves to be shown more respect after helping Croatia into the World Cup final. People are crying. It's something historical for us.

"This is something we will never forget". We beat our record of 20 years ago and we had it on our shoulders all the time, this weight. And it Is a special history when you look back and see that three times in the knock out stages we have played 120 minutes and yet we still had fresher legs than that England team.

'We have the chance to do something better, and hopefully we can do it on Sunday.

Lovren said: "This is something we will never forget".

'It was tough first-half. Now with my national team we are in the final. We couldn't control the ball or control situations.

'In extra-time we showed we are still able with the fatigue to play our game'.

"Modric is not one of the best, [he is] the best midfield player in the world and if we win this World Cup he deserves the Ballon d'Or".

Lovren also called for Croatia team-mate Luka Modric to receive the highest individual award in world football, the Ballon d'Or.
