Katarina Zarutskie was bitten by a nurse shark. Her post about the incident was inundated with criticism.

Photos of Katarina Zarutskie floating in water above a shoal of nurse sharks on Staniel Cay island in The Bahamas went viral this week. She held her bleeding arm out of the water to avoid attracting more sharks. "I definitely will be thinking twice but it won't be scaring me away!" she told the BBC.

The University of Miami nursing student and aspiring model went into shark-infested waters willingly during her trip to the Bahamas with her boyfriend and his family.

One of the pictures shows the 19-year-old being bitten on the arm by one of the sharks.

Revealing all to Buzzfeed, she said: "Nurse sharks are calm creatures", adding that she had seen photos of people swimming next to them before.

She still has debris in the wound and is waiting to see whether she'll need surgery to remove it.

"When he bit me, supposedly it sounded like a big vacuum seal sort of sound", she said. These are among the questions we've been asking ourselves-and not surprisingly, she's found them upsetting. The model did not even plan to upload the images to her social media page until she was approached by journalists about her experience earlier this week. "When I got out of the water and realized I had all of my fingers and my wrist and I could move it I just felt so blessed that it wasn't a more unsafe and morbid situation", she tells us.

She jumped into the water on her own, without any sort of tour guide. "I have all my fingers, I have my wrists, and I'm just so blessed it was a minor accident", Zarutske said.

Raised in Laguna Beach, California, Zarutskie said she grew up surfing and enjoying the beach. "They took the information they wanted and really spun the story in a way that I'm a stupid blond Instagram model". Now, nurse sharks are largely pretty docile, but it's always worth remembering that they are still sharks.
