Katarina Zarutskie was holidaying in the Bahamas, with her boyfriend and his family last month when she made a decision to go swimming with nurse sharks in the marina, NBC reports.

The BBC reports she'd finished lunch one day on Staniel Cay with her boyfriend and his family when they came upon people snorkeling with nurse sharks. She added the locals were "very encouraging" in telling her to try the activity.

An Instagram model has been bitten by a shark during an impromptu photo shoot. "What happened was an accident, and I don't want to throw the shark under the bus", Zarutske said.

Zarutskie hopes her modeling career will continue and she has not ruled out posing with sharks again.

Ms Zarutskie then swam to shore as her arm bled.

"[Doctors] now believe that I still have pieces of the shark teeth in my arm", she revealed.

Anyway, Katarina was swimming around with them when one of them obviously mistook her arm for a tasty morsel and bit down on it.

The 19-year-old is due to start a double-degree in nursing and business in Miami, and is no stranger to the ocean, having grown up doing water sports in her native California.

Katarina Zarutskie was bitten by a shark in the Bahamas, in an attack that her boyfriend's father caught on camera. "I've seen countless photos of people with them on Instagram".

Katarina Zarutskie holds her arm above her head after being bitten by a nurse shark in the Bahamas. Zarutskie managed to wriggle free, but she knew if she thrashed around and dripped blood in the water, she might attract more sharks-so instead, she calmly stood up, grasping her wound to stanch the flow of blood, and was able to get of the water.

But there were warning signs around the picturesque spot where the shark attack took place. She had to get several stitches and was put on a round of antibiotics.

"They are wild animals and it's an uncontrollable situation", she tells BuzzFeed.

She says she was not posing for Instagram when she went into the waters and simply wanted a once in a lifetime experience to be with the animals.
