Pastrana, riding an Indian Scout FTR750, jumped 143 feet to clear 52 crushed cars and 192 feet over 16 Greyhound buses.

Travis Pastrana has channelled his inner Evel Knievel - and outer Evel Knievel, judging by the outfit - and bettered three of the infamous stunt star's records.

The jump was ideal, the landing tight but successful, and Pastrana had done what he had set out to do - fulfill Evel Knievel's promise never to leave a jump unfinished, albeit 50 years later.

Other than the abortive Snake River Canyon jump - which doesn't count because the Idaho state authorities classed the Skycycle X2 as an aircraft rather than a vehicle - Knievel's most notorious fail was his attempt to jump the fountains in front of Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Knievel famously crashed after missing the landing on that jump.

Then came the grand finale: Jumping the main fountain at Caesar's Palace.

The event took place in Las Vegas Sunday and was produced and aired live by The History Channel.

"It's just such an honor to live a day in Evel's footsteps and literally his boots", Pastrana said, via ESPN. Knievel wiped out on the landing and was hospitalized with multiple broken bones, but Pastrana soared over the fountain and landed well down the landing ramp.

The History channel broadcast the event under the title "Evel Live".

It's tough to jump over a bunch of cars, but you know what's tougher? He died in 2007 at the age of 69.

"The only reason we're adding more is in the spirit of Evel Knievel", Pastrana said.

Capping the night? A dive by Pastrana into the fountains to celebrate. I proposed to my wife (Lyndsey) here; I had my first Nitro Circus show here. "I'm not done yet, but this was one of the coolest things - the coolest thing - I've ever done".

Even with just a 200-foot run-off area, Pastrana made the final and most hard jump (a record length of 149 feet) look easy, even performing a NASCAR-style two-wheeled burnout in celebration. He also attempted and completed three of the famous daredevil's most iconic jumps.
