Students Outraged Over Trump's Unannounced SCOTUS Nominee

Reuters reported last week that conservative federal appeals court judges Brett Kavanaugh and Kethledge are the two most serious contenders being considered by Trump for the U.S. Supreme Court, citing a source familiar with the process.

Trump will announce his nominee for the seat in a characteristic display of political braggadocio on primetime TV on Monday night.

The president whittled the list from 25 names, selected and vetted by the hard-right leaning Federalist Society, after meeting the candidates individually and by talking to White House aides, conservative lawmakers and Vice President Pence.

The source told Reuters that Amy Coney Barrett of IN, a Trump-appointed judge on the Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, was still IN contention but that the Republican president had been asking more questions about the other two, who have more extensive judicial records.

He said Kavanaugh would be his top choice to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Today, Graham said all of the possible Supreme Court Justice picks on President Trump's list are "outstanding" and each one is a "winning lottery ticket" for Republicans.

Mr. Thapar was on the shortlist of candidates after Judge Antonin Scalia died in 2016.

Before boarding Air Force One en route to Washington, Trump said he was considering four people and that of those under consideration, "you can't go wrong".

The US President has chosen prime time to make the announcement.

This will be 6.30 am - Tuesday - local India time on July 10. I do think the president has to think about who is the easiest to get confirmed here.

"I think of the four people, I have it down to three or two. The whole list is extraordinary", he said. On Sunday there was no indication that he had yet made his decision, as speculation continued to swirl around the appointment. "And I believe this person will do a great job". We'll announce it on Monday.

In his conversations over the weekend, Trump expressed renewed interest in Hardiman - the runner-up when Trump nominated Gorsuch, said two people with knowledge of his thinking who were not authorized to speak publicly.

The son of Indian-American immigrants, Thapar is the Nation's first Article III judge of South Asian descent.
