Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov told a delegation of US lawmakers he hoped their visit to Moscow would help restore relations between the two legislatures, Interfax news agency reported.

The senior administration official stressed that while United States officials have "repeatedly" raised election meddling in meetings with Russian officials, "the fact of the matter is we have not had the kinds of conversations, direct conversations, across the table conversations about things like election meddling and malign activity that really do need to take place".

The Kremlin on Tuesday said Vladimir Putin would be comfortable with holding one-on-one talks with President Donald Trump at their summit later this month in Helsinki, according to a report.

In a conference call, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, said: "There are quite a lot of issues between Moscow and Washington where our points of view are dramatically divided".

The two officials also discussed issues related to Syria and North Korea, read the statement. "We hope for a honest discussion of all problems clouding our relations with the US", Lavrov told a news conference.

"We're hoping that coming out of the Putin-Trump meeting in Helsinki, it will be the beginning, maybe, of a new day", Shelby added.

"We will have to wait and see, and go from there, but we recognize that the world is better off, I believe, if Russian Federation and the USA have fewer tensions", Shelby added.

The senators then met with representatives of the Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament. Relations between Russia and the US have sunk to their lowest point in decades amid USA sanctions over Russian meddling in the US election and Russia's action in Ukraine.
