In October 2017, Google's venture capital arm CapitalG invested $1 billion United States dollars in Lyft, Uber's primary rival in the US. The feature enabled users to book an Uber directly from Google Maps without opening the Uber app. Now, users can only identify their route and get a ballpark fare estimate on the Google Maps App. This meant that while searching for location of places, users would also be able to hail an Uber within Google Maps itself. At first, Uber was the only ride sharing app to show up in Google Maps directions view.

Now, while Uber still appears under the "rides" option, you have to click through to the Uber app to access it. So maybe Uber's disappearance from Google Maps isn't really that surprising.

As mentioned, Uber integration from Google Maps app has not been entirely removed.

Last year, Google introduced a feature in its navigation app - Google Maps - using which the users were able to book a ride with Uber easily. San Francisco: Google has reportedly killed the ability to directly book Uber rides from inside Google Maps without giving any reason. As of now, Google hasn't confirmed anything as to why it dropped the feature.
