Cristiano Ronaldo set a new bust on Madeira

A statue of Cristiano Ronaldo that was widely mocked and left football fans scratching their heads has been replaced.

A controversial statue of Cristiano Ronaldo has been replaced, at his family's request.

The airport has replaced his original effort with a bust that boasts a greater likeness to Ronaldo.

While his home island concentrates on his likenesses, the real Ronaldo is busy at the World Cup, notching a hat trick to earn a point against Spain just a few hours after the airport bust was exchanged.

The previous statue was mocked on social media after it was unveiled at the airport past year, with many questioning its resemblance to the footballer.

The original one was unveiled past year and was designed by Madeiran artist Emanuel Santos.

A petition has even been launched online to have the original bust put back in place.

"We consider that the bust is more an attraction for our island today, and we can not accept in any way its replacement", a translated version of the petition reads.

Bleacher Report commissioned Mr Santos to have a second attempt at the bust, which he completed in order to show his son that "if he enjoys doing something very much, [he] doesn't let himself be defeated by negative criticism".

Meanwhile, NAIJ.comhad earlier reported that the Portugal global scored a hat-trick in their 3-3 draw against Spain at the ongoing World Cup.
