Former Oregon LB Fotu Leiato found dead in Eugene

Former Oregon Ducks linebacker Fotu Leiato has died. Police said the driver told officers on the scene that he was alone and wasn't carrying any passengers. Police responded to the report and found Leiato's body. Boulevard and Kinsrow Avenue after a woman walking in the area saw a hand sticking out of brush.

McLaughlin said investigators determined the deceased person had been a passenger in the vehicle.

Leiato was a member of the Oregon Football team for three seasons finding moderate success entering his Senior Season, but off the field issues cost him a spot on the team.

The driver of the auto, Pedro Chavarin Jr., 22, told police he was the lone person in the crash.

The former college football star's body was found near a crash site that had been cleared hours earlier. He was transported to a local hospital and then after an investigation, he was cited in lieu of custody for DUII.

The football program confirmed in May that Leiato had been dismissed from the program. He had three sacks in the spring game and was expected to contend for a starting outside linebacker job this coming season. Charges from those arrests included theft, criminal trespassing, criminal mischief and misdemeanor trespassing.

Leiato was dismissed from the team in May after he was arrested for the second time since January.
