Grandmother caught on video transporting kids in dog kennels, Memphis police say

A grandma in Tennessee was arrested after a video of her allegedly transporting kids in pet kennels in the back of a Ford Explorer went viral.

A grandmother accused of putting her two grandkids in dog kennels and driving them across Memphis was arraigned Monday.

Neighbors were shocked at news of the incident and said that Cheeks had just bought two German Shepherd puppies, which is why the kennels were in her auto.

The children were kept in two separate kennels as the temperature blazed at 95 degrees.Police say Cheeks instructed the children to get inside of the kennels because there wasn't any room left in her vehicle.

Camillia Cowan, who said she was Cheeks' neighbor, according to WHBQ, was deeply troubled when she saw the video online.

"Leimome Cheeks was interviewed and admitted to riding from Whitehaven to Collerville with the children in the kennel", a police affidavit obtained by Commercial Appeal states.

Neighbors vouched for Cheeks and said they did not think she intentionally did anything wrong.

"It's shocking, it really is", Blake told WATN.

Skylarr Blake, who lives a few doors down from Cheeks, said he couldn't imagine her doing such a thing. This lady had no problem at all letting her kids out of these cages in public.

One neighbor told Local 24 it was "very sad because it feels like hell right here now, it's very hot". Something is going on with her. Although she's since been released on bond, she's due to appear in court this week. "If she did that, then that's out of character for her", neighbor Eugene Richmond said.
