Did Justify have help from another Bob Baffert horse in Belmont victory?

Bob Baffert-trained Justify arrived in town on Wednesday ahead of his attempt to become the 13th horse to complete the triple crown, and the second in four years, after American Pharoah in 2015.

Justify became only the 13th horse in history to win the Triple Crown Saturday at Belmont Stakes.

Justify and jockey Mike Smith pose for photos in the winner's circle after winning the 150th Belmont Stakes and Triple Crown at Belmont Park, in Elmont, N.Y., on June 9, 2018. Eight of his overmatched Belmont opponents had more rest, and he wore them out. "They were going slow and (jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr.) said he didn't want to make some insane move down the backside to go join him, which probably wouldn't have made any sense". Gronkowski had won his last four starts in England, but had never raced on dirt or competed at farther than a mile prior to Saturday.

"To me, Abel Tasman and Hopportunity, when they set the stage early, I thought this is going to be good", Baffert said.

Justify beat more Belmont opponents (nine) and more in the series (35) than any other Triple Crown hero. He made a strong and sudden move along the inside while picking up horses rapidly on the second turn, got within easy striking distance of the leader nearing midstretch, but could not sustain the bid while racing a bit greenly and failing to change leads until deep stretch.

Things like that happen to all horses, and even those with a foundation find it hard to overcome. Instead of thanking the horse's owner and the trainer, the very first thing he told NBC while being interviewed on horseback following the race, "First of all, I want to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ".

Mike Smith, the jockey riding Justify in Saturday night's Belmont Stakes, could have said anything in his first television interview.

This is the second Triple Crown win for legendary horse trainer Bob Baffert. The first one to do it was Seattle Slew in 1977.

"I can't believe I'm here in NY winning it again".

Justify's victory gives racing its second Triple Crown victor of the decade.

Restoring Hope didn't compete in either the Kentucky Derby or Preakness Stakes and was one of the biggest long shots in the field at 33-1, per OddsShark. It could have been a whole different story for us if Justify wasn't here, but he was, and you've got to run against everybody. In that case, the last Triple Crown victor came when Jimmy Carter was in the second year of his Presidency, the Shah of Iran was still in power, and the Soviet Union still existed and had not yet launched what would become a disastrous war in Afghanistan, and Grease had not yet been released in theaters. More than $10 million was bet on the race.

Hofburg paid $3.70 to show.

With the win, Justify, who did not race as a two-year-old, improved to 6-0 in his young career, which started just 111 days ago.
