The 61-year-old finished his tenure as the team's winningest coach but could never get it over the hump in the playoffs.

Casey was sacked in May, shortly after being dubbed Coach of the Year by the National Basketball Coach's Association.

Casey was sacked by the Raptors a month ago despite leading the team to a franchise-best 59 wins this past regular season.

The team had reportedly narrowed down its search between Casey and John Beillin of the University of MI last week.

Toronto reportedly has a shortlist of two candidates - 50-year-old Nick Nurse (who has been a Raptors assistant under Casey since the 2013-14 season) and top worldwide head coach Ettore Messina, 58, who has been a San Antonio Spurs assistant under Gregg Popovich since 2014.

He replaces Stan Van Gundy, who was sacked in May.

"Dwane is one of the most successful and highly respected coaches in our league", Pistons Owner Tom Gores said in a statement.

Casey, who was sacked by the Toronto Raptors after a second-round playoff loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers last month, was selected from a coaching pool that also included MI head coach John Beilein.

Under Casey, the Raptors won four Atlantic Division titles and advanced to the playoffs in five consecutive seasons. He was named Eastern Conference Coach of the Month five times, and last February, became the first coach in Raptors history to be selected to coach in the NBA All-Star game. Casey also coached the Timberwolves from 2005-07, where he amassed a 53-69 record.

Despite missing the playoffs, Detroit traded for Blake Griffin and have a strong tandem of him and centre Andre Drummond.
