Naperville officer rescues young boy running on Route 59

Sgt. Anthony Mannino is being hailed as a hero after he rescued a 1-year-old from a busy highway near Aurora, Illinois.

Mannino stopped his squad auto in the right lane, keeping the lane clear of traffic, and then ran up to the child while shouting at him to stop and "come here". The 1-year-old was running alongside traffic, including large trucks whizzing by at unsafe speeds.

Mannino then got out on foot and chased after the boy, managing to quickly get him to safety as cars and tractor-trailers sped by. "You're OK, you're OK", Mannino calmly tells the boy as he grabs him.

Mannino alerted dispatch that he caught the boy and would begin the search for his parents, according to the Naperville Sun. In dashcam footage of the rescue, Mannino is seen running after the child before carrying it back to his cruiser.

The department's post says the child "escaped his mother's watchful eye" and wandered along Route 59 as traffic whizzed by.

The department posted dash cam video of the incident to Facebook and noted Mannino was presented Thursday with a live-saving service award.
