He said that the per capita plastic consumption in India is much lower than in many parts of the world.

But a report from UN Environment on plastics finds "surging momentum" for action to curb plastic pollution, and sets out ways to tackle the problem - pointing out that government levies and bans have been the best way to limit overuse of disposable plastic products.

Ministry of Environment participated on Tuesday in the 2018 World Environment Day under the theme "Beat Plastic Pollution", which focuses on how plastic, one of the most unsafe pollutants, affects our ecosystems and environment.

The Gujarat Pollution Control Board, despite criticism from the high court, is not equipped to deal with plastic pollution. In our cities, plastic bags also choke drains, which results in flooding.

With an objective to curb the plastic menace, distribution of jute bag was started on the occasion, which would subsequently cover all employees. In the last decade, the world has produced more plastic than we have in the last century. Make this planet greener, plant trees and ban plastic.
