Ghana's football association dissolved after bribery claims

Ghana football boss Kwesi Nyantakyi, a member of FIFA's decision-making council, is under investigation for possible ethics violations and has been provisionally suspended for 90 days, FIFA said on Friday.

Kwesi Nyantakyi was President of the Ghana Football Association in the last 13 years and was CAF Vice President up until his resignation on Friday.

The investigation, by controversial journalist Anas Aremayaw Anas, invited Mr Nyantakyi to a luxury hotel in the Middle East with the promise of meeting a wealthy businessman it said was interested in a sponsorship deal with the GFA.

The investigative documentary titled "Number 12: 'When Greed and Corruption Become the Norm" exposes corruption in football administration in Ghana and other parts of Africa.

"I hereby apologise unreservedly to the father of the Nation, H.E. Nana Akufo Addo, H.E. the Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, Hon".

"I wish to clarify that at no time prior to or subsequent to any deliberations on the video did I consult, contact or inform any government official about discussions on the video". During this time, Mr. Nyantakyi is banned from all football activities at both national and worldwide level (administrative, sports or any other).

I wish to state my interest was to develop Ghana Football which led me to take the supposed investors to the President of the Ghana Football Association.

"The documentary exposes the gross malfunction of the Ghana Football Association, characterized by widespread fraud, corruption, and bribery", read the statement, which was signed by Information Minister Mustapha Abdul-Hamid.

Provisional measures will be put in place to run the sport in Ghana until a new body is formed.

Ghana's U-20 team also won a historic World Cup under his reign.

Football is Ghana's national sport and the revelations have sent shockwaves through the country, just under a week before the start of the World Cup finals in Russian Federation, for which they failed to qualify.
