One of the - many - overwhelming criticisms of the movie was Leto's lacklustre Joker, which, though little more than a glorified cameo, didn't quite measure up to the freakish tales from the movie's set.

Aside from this Joker movie, it was previously announced that Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn was getting her own spin-off, which now appears to have been amalgamated with the Birds of Prey movie, set to be directed by Cathy Yan.

Jared Leto is reportedly set to star in a standalone movie about the Joker.

Last fall, Warner Bros. announced that a Joker origin story separate from the Suicide Squad depiction and the current DC cinematic universe was also in development.

Despite yesterday's news about the new Jared Leto project, Deadline reports that Warner Bros.is still developing the Joker origin movie from Todd Phillips.

The plan is for Warner Bros.to build out the world that it created with Suicide Squad. The studio's new direction means multiple actors can star as different versions of the same character without overlap. The Oscar-winner had made it clear following the film's release that he hoped to expand on the character in future films in a more substantive, if not starring, role.

Leto and the studio are now looking for a writer for the project, but there's no start date in place. Even then, it's entirely possible the film could come before Suicide Squad 2 - which does have a writer and director - should the studio opt to push Leto's Joker to the front of its schedule. Also unknown is whether or not that will begin filming before or after the Suicide Squad sequel, which is expected to go into production at some point next year.
