Gasquet hoping to end 15-match losing streak against Nadal

Rafael Nadal continued his bid for an 11th French Open title on Saturday by brushing aside home favourite Richard Gasquet to claim a 16th consecutive win over his childhood friend and reach the fourth round.

Moments after hugging Gasquet sympathetically, Nadal was all smiles as he exchanged a couple of rallies with a ball boy to warm applause from the crowd. A rare highlight for Gasquet was when he earned applause from Nadal following a superb cushioned volley at the net. Nadal clinched victory on his first match point when Gasquet chopped an errant backhand long.

Cilic made no mistake when the second match point finally came in the fifth set.

Play continues at Roland Garros at 11am (10am BST).

The sixth-seeded Anderson won all 21 of his service games and compiled a 56-19 advantage in winners, including 18 aces.

While waiting to take to the court against Johnson, Cilic was able to do a little scouting of his fourth-round opponent Fabio Fognini, who outlasted Kyle Edmund over five sets, 6-3 4-6 3-6 6-4 6-4. Sharapova next faces Serena Williams in what will be their 22nd career meeting. Nadal has won the previous 15 matches, and has won 23 sets in a row against the Frenchman, with his last set dropped coming all the way back in 2008.

Marterer isn't on that level yet, however, and facing an in-form Nadal at the French Open is the biggest test of his career to date.

The 10th-seeded American beat Camila Giorgi of Italy 4-6, 6-1, 8-6 on Saturday. Stephens will be squaring off against No. 25 Anett Kontaveit. Sloane Stephens advanced too, but the 10th-seeded American had a much more hard time beating Italy's Camila Giorgi 4-6 6-1 8-6.

Serena Williams faces her toughest test yet in her return to Grand Slam tennis after giving birth, against 11th-seeded Julia Goerges.

However, it is unlikely they will take to the court before lunchtime as there are two women's singles matches on beforehand.
