When Metroid Prime 4 was announced previous year at E3, the conclusion most came to was that Retro Studios was working on it.

It seems improbable that Nintendo Retro Studios would create such a game, yet there have been more than a dozen posts on Reddit that claim otherwise, as well as multiple gaming sites and blogs.

A Star Fox racer certainly isn't what I'd have chosen for Retro to work on next, but, that said, it sounds like this project is essentially a new F-Zero in disguise.

Retro most recently dropped Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze for the Nintendo Switch, a re-release of the original Wii U version of the game that dropped back in 2014.

The news stems from a post on the Star Fox subreddit that was published late last week. Here's hoping that Nintendo Australia don't rename it "Lylat Wars: Starwing Grand Prix".

The Diddy Kong Racing comparisons, on the other hand, could actually end up fitting fairly well. Our sources suggest that each Grand Prix would be made up of three races that culminate in a boss battle and that players would be able to compete online. A sequel, Donkey Kong Racing, was in development for the Gamecube but was eventually canceled due to Microsoft's acquisition of the studio.

Nintendo really hasn't quite figured out how to bring Star Fox into the modern era, with just about every attempt after Star Fox 64 being underwhelming. Many scoff at the possible new take on the franchise. An F-Zero game from Retro is something I can get behind. If they have been, it's likely that the game is pretty far along in the development process.
