According to GasBuddy historical data, gasoline prices on May 14 in NY have ranged widely over the last five years: $2.48 per gallon in 2017, $2.37 in 2016, $2.83 in 2015, $3.89 in 2014 and $3.72 in 2013. In Toledo, the average gas price is about $2.76 per gallon, according to ToledoGasPrices.com.

The Detroit-area's average was about $2.94, up about 6 cents per gallon.

AAA expects 1.3 million people will take a trip during the holiday weekend, up 5 percent from previous year and the highest since 2005.

The New Jersey-based Oil Price Information Service earlier this year forecast that Americans would spend $955.6 million per day on fuel in 2018, or $348.8 trillion for the year - the highest since 2014.
