Vasiliy Lomachenko Knocks Out Jorge Linares, Wins WBA Lightweight Title

Vasyl Lomachenko claimed the WBA [Super] Lightweight title on Saturday with a brutal 10th round stoppage of Jorge Linares at Madison Square Garden in NY.

"It was a great fight", Lomachenko said.

"It was a great fight", said Lomachenko.

An interesting battle told himself Lomachenko.

Having won a world title at featherweight, super featherweight and lightweight in just 12 fights, Lomachenko shattered Jeff Fenech's record being the fastest man to win a world title in three weight classes.

Lomachenko's left hook to Linares' liver was reminiscent to the punch Bernard Hopkins landed to defeat Oscar De La Hoya 14 years ago at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Although Linares stumbled to his feet a tick before the count of 10, referee Ricky Gonzalez saw he was in no shape to continue and waved a halt to the proceedings after an elapsed time of 2 minutes, 8 seconds.

"Going into this fight, we knew Loma was a huge talent", said Lomachenko's promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank.

The bout was relatively tight until the decisive blow was landed - with both fighters ahead 86-84 on one judge's scorecard, while the other had it at 85-85. The third judge, Julie Lederman, had it even when the fight was stopped (85-85). It had to be demoralizing to Linares to be unable to capitalize on the opportunity.

"That right hand [in the sixth] it was a great punch". The challenger also connected on 42 percent of his power shots and out jabbed his opponent 112-68. "His punches to the body surprised me".

Jaime Munguia produced a stunning upset win over Sadam Ali to claim the WBO light-middleweight title.

Had the fight gone the distance, the decision seemingly could've gone either way.

Linares will have been familiar to British fans having beaten Anthony Crolla twice past year, but Lomachenko's stock is rapidly rising in the professional ranks and this was a whole different kettle of fish for the Venezuelan. "He had 397 amateur fights, so he is a consummate fighter".

There is no other fighter on this planet right now with his silk-and-savage skillset, a lovely combination of athleticism and technique with the mental gifts of heart and IQ.

Lomachenko moved up to 135 pounds to challenge Linares because he couldn't secure title unification fights at 130 pounds.

This will be Conlan's 4th fight in NY, he wants to dispose of Larrinaga as quickly as possible with no damage done so he could fight on June 30th against Adeilson Dos Santos in front of a hometown crowd in Belfast. On Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, Lomachenko showed he also has a fighter's heart, the kind that can get off the canvas and dethrone a champion.
